Frequently Asked Questions
The pieces
Are these really handmade?
Yes. Every piece is shaped, sanded and finished by hand by the artisans we work with. They are made in small batches, not stamped out by the thousand, which is why no two ever leave exactly alike.
Why doesn't mine look identical to the photo?
Because the photograph shows one piece, and yours is its sibling. Grain runs differently through every plank, clay takes glaze in its own way, and fibre is never spun twice the same. Expect a family resemblance rather than a copy.
What are they made from?
Solid mango, paulownia and teak. Stoneware. Jute, seagrass and cotton. Forged iron. Nothing veneered, nothing printed to look like something else.
Are the small marks and hairline cracks defects?
No. Wood moves with the seasons, and a fine line along the grain or a darker knot is the material behaving as it should. We only turn a piece away when a crack runs through it or the finish is broken.
Is the wood food safe?
The wooden pieces are finished with food-safe oil, so bread, fruit, nuts and dry serving are all fine. Keep soups, dressings and anything oily off the bare wood, or line the piece with paper first.
Care and keeping
How do I care for the wooden pieces?
Wipe with a damp cloth and dry straight away. Never let one soak or sit in water. Two or three times a year, rub a little food-safe mineral oil into the grain with a soft cloth and leave it overnight. That is the whole ritual.
Can they go in the dishwasher or the microwave?
Not the wood, in either. Heat and standing water are the two things that will split a solid piece. Our stoneware will survive a dishwasher, though it keeps its surface longer if you wash it by hand.
Will the colour change over time?
It will, and that is rather the point. Pale woods deepen, oiled surfaces grow warmer, iron settles into a softer black. Direct sun does it unevenly, so turn the piece now and then if it lives on a bright sill.
What about the jute and seagrass?
Shake them out and go over them with the brush attachment of a vacuum. Blot spills rather than rubbing them in, and keep them out of bathrooms and other damp rooms, where natural fibre holds moisture.
Shipping
How much is shipping?
Nothing. Shipping is free everywhere in the United States, on every order, with no minimum to reach. The price you see is the price at checkout.
How long will my order take?
Most orders leave within one or two business days and arrive within three to eight. The window for each piece is listed on its own page, and you will get tracking the moment it ships.
Do you ship outside the United States?
Not yet. We would rather do one country properly than several badly. Leave your email and we will tell you the day that changes.
How is it packed?
In recycled paper and moulded pulp, with no plastic film and no polystyrene. Everything in the box can go straight into your recycling.
Orders and returns
Can I return something?
Yes, within 30 days, as long as it is unused and comes back in its packaging. Return shipping within the US is on us. Tell us what didn't work and we will send a label the same day.
Mine arrived damaged. What now?
Send us a photo within seven days of delivery and we will replace the piece or refund you, whichever you prefer. There is no need to ship the broken one back.
Will a sold-out piece come back?
Sometimes. Because these are made in small batches, a run can be the last one. Add your email to the piece's waiting list and you will hear first if it returns.
Can I send it as a gift?
Of course. Add a note at checkout and we will write it on a card by hand. Gift orders go out without any prices in the box.
Something else on your mind?
Write to us and a person will answer, usually within one working day.
