Hobnail Terracotta Planter

A small round planter covered in rows of raised hobnail bumps, with a plain smooth band at the rim. The white is a chalky limewash brushed thin over terracotta, so the warm clay blushes through at the rim, on the high points of the bumps and around the base. Unglazed and matte, the kind of surface that catches side light rather than reflecting it.

A few things worth knowing before it arrives.

What will fit in it?

A single succulent, a herb, or a small cutting. It holds 1.2 qt / 1.1 L of soil.

How should I water it?

Easiest is to keep the plant in its nursery pot, lift it out to water and drop it back once it has drained.

Will the white wear off?

The limewash is meant to wear a little at the edges over time. That's the finish ageing, not failing.

Is the surface rough?

Matte and chalky, with the hobnail bumps standing proud. Unglazed, so it catches side light rather than reflecting it.

Can it take frost?

Bring it in before a hard freeze. Terracotta holds water in the clay and hard frost can crack any pot.

Every piece is shaped, sanded and finished in a small workshop. Grain, tone and outline move from one to the next, so the piece that arrives is yours rather than a copy of the photograph.
