How big is it?

12 in / 30 cm across and shallow. Wide enough to anchor a sideboard or an island without anything in it.

Is the black painted on?

It is a matte finish worked into the wood rather than a thick coat of paint, which is why the grain still reads through it where the ribs catch light.

Can I put fruit in it?

It is sold as a decorative piece. If you want fruit in it, line it or keep to whole, dry fruit — the finish is not made for food contact.

Will mine look like the photo?

The shape and the ribbing will. The way the finish sits on the grain will not — every blank takes the black a little differently.

A QUIET OBJECT

Big enough to hold a table on its own

Twelve inches is the size at which a bowl stops being tableware and starts being furniture. Empty on a sideboard it is the thing the room is arranged around. Full of fruit on an island it still reads as an object first. Either way you don't have to do anything to it.

Turned from a single block rather than glued up from staves, so the grain runs continuously round the bowl.

Each rib is a pass of the tool. They stack from rim to base and are what gives the black surface something to do with light.

The finish sits in the wood rather than on top of it, so the grain still shows where the light rakes across.

Denser wood takes the finish darker, open grain takes it lighter. No two bowls read the same.

Questions, answered

A few things worth knowing before it arrives.

Is it heavy?

It has weight to it — solid wood at twelve inches across. Enough that it stays where you put it, not so much that it is awkward to move.

Is the inside ribbed too?

The ribbing is cut into the outside. The inside is left smooth so the bowl still works as a bowl.

Can I put it outdoors?

No. It is an interior piece — damp and direct sun will both move the wood and dull the finish.

How do I clean it?

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry it straight away. Never soak it, and keep it out of the dishwasher.

Why not for food?

The black finish is a decorative one. Whole dry fruit sitting on it is fine; anything wet, oily or cut should go on a plate or a liner.
