Are the fixings included?

No — what you need depends on your wall, so nails and screws aren't in the box. The brackets themselves are fitted to the shelf.

Black Floating Wall Shelf

Four feet of solid wood finished in satin black, with the brackets sitting behind it so nothing shows once it is up. The front edge is the point: it is not cut straight but waves in a slow curve along the whole length, so the shelf is deeper at some points than others while the back stays flat to the wall. Every edge and corner is rounded off.

It carries up to twenty pounds. Ships assembled in a single piece; nails and screws are not included, since what you need depends on your wall. Because each one is finished by hand, the wave and the tone shift slightly from shelf to shelf.

A QUIET OBJECT

A line on the wall, not a plank

Straight shelves disappear into a room, which is usually the point. This one doesn't: the front edge moves, so the shelf reads as a drawn line with objects standing on it. Four feet is long enough to hold a wall on its own.

A few things worth knowing before it arrives.

Does it come assembled?

Yes, it ships in one piece with the brackets already fitted. You supply the wall fixings.

What fixings do I need?

That depends on your wall — plasterboard, brick and timber stud all need different anchors. Any hardware shop will match them to the 20 lb load.

Can I hang two in a row?

You can, and because the wave is cut by hand they won't be identical. Most people space them rather than butt them together.

Will it hold books?

Up to 20 lb spread along the shelf. For a full run of hardbacks, use two shelves rather than loading one.

Is the black shiny?

Satin, not gloss. It has a soft sheen rather than a reflection, and it doesn't show fingerprints the way lacquer does.
