How big is it?

16 in / 41 cm square. Lap-sized for dinner, and the right size to line a bread basket.

Is that one napkin or a set?

One. Buy as many as you need — they look better as a group when they are not a matched set.

Should I iron it?

No. Double gauze is woven in two layers that crinkle as they dry; ironing it flat removes the only texture it has.

Will the raw edge fray more?

It settles after the first couple of washes and then stops. That soft fringe is the finish, not a fault.

A pressed napkin is a performance: the first person to pick it up ruins it. A gauze one starts rumpled, stays rumpled and reads as a table people actually eat at. Nobody has to be careful with it, which is the whole reason it works.

Two fine layers of cotton tacked together at intervals. That is where the crinkle comes from and why it dries so fast.

Cut and left, rather than hemmed. It frays a little in the first washes and then holds.

We stopped hemming these. A hem on gauze is a hard line on a soft cloth, and it is the first thing that looks wrong after a few washes. Cut it, let it fray, leave it alone.

Questions, answered

A few things worth knowing before it arrives.

Does it shrink?

A little in the first wash, as any cotton does. Wash cool and it settles there.

Can I use it in the kitchen?

Yes. Two layers of gauze absorb well for the weight, so it works as a small cloth as much as a napkin.

Will it stain?

It is undyed cotton, so it takes colour like any cloth. Cold water straight away deals with most of it.

Why only one?

Because tables need different numbers. Buy four or buy nine — they look better as an odd, slightly mismatched group than as a boxed set.

Can I tumble dry it?

On low. The crinkle comes back as it dries, which is exactly what you want.

The variation is the object, not a flaw.

Every piece is shaped, sanded and finished in a small workshop. Grain, tone and outline move from one to the next, so the piece that arrives is yours rather than a copy of the photograph.
