How long do they burn?

Around three hours each. Beeswax burns slower than paraffin, so a thin candle lasts longer than you would expect.

Do they smell of anything?

Faintly of honey, which is the wax itself. Nothing is added.

Will they fit my holders?

They are just under an inch thick and fit the wooden and ceramic holders in this shop. Any standard taper cup will take them.

Why is there a bloom on the surface?

Real beeswax develops a pale film over time. Warm it with your hand or a hairdryer on low and it disappears.

A SMALL THING

The texture stays all the way down

A moulded candle is smooth until it burns, and then it is a smooth candle that has been used. A rolled one keeps its honeycomb the whole way to the holder, so it looks deliberate at the end of the evening as well as the start.

A sheet of beeswax wound round a wick. Nothing poured, nothing moulded.

Beeswax

Not a paraffin blend. It burns slower, cleaner and with a warmer flame than petroleum wax.

Honeycomb sheet

The texture is pressed into the sheet before it is rolled, so it runs through the whole candle rather than sitting on the surface.

Around the wick

Wound by hand. The seam is visible if you look, which is how you tell a rolled candle from a cast one.

Unscented

Honey on its own

Nothing is added. What you smell is the wax, which is why it never fights with food.

Questions, answered

A few things worth knowing before it arrives.

Do they drip?

Far less than paraffin. Keep them out of a draught and most of the wax burns rather than running.

Should I trim the wick?

Yes, to about a quarter inch before each burn. An untrimmed wick smokes and burns the candle down faster.

Are they scented?

No. The faint honey smell is the beeswax itself.

What is the white film?

Bloom — a natural sign of unrefined beeswax. Rub it with a warm hand and the colour comes straight back.

Will they fit a standard holder?

Yes. Just under an inch thick, which is the ordinary taper size.

Every piece is shaped, sanded and finished in a small workshop. Grain, tone and outline move from one to the next, so the piece that arrives is yours rather than a copy of the photograph.
