How big is it?

10 in / 25 cm tall with a full, round body. Big enough to stand alone on a console, short enough for a dining table.

Can I put water in it?

No. The surface is painted rather than glazed, so it is made for dried stems. Water will mark it from the inside out.

Why does it look powdery?

Because it is painted, not glazed. The finish sits like limewash on a wall — matte, slightly chalky, with the clay texture still readable underneath.

Will mine look like the photo?

The shape will. The surface will not, quite — each piece is thrown and painted by hand, so the thickness of the finish varies.

Our materials

We work with solid wood, stone, glass and natural fibre, chosen for how they age rather than how they photograph. Every piece is finished by hand, so grain, tone and outline shift from one to the next.

More on how we choose them

A QUIET OBJECT

Closer to a wall than to pottery

Most vases announce themselves with a glaze. This one behaves like plaster: it takes the light of the room and gives back almost nothing. Put three dried stems in it and the arrangement is the thing you see, not the container.

MATERIAL & MAKING

Thrown, then painted

Terracotta on the wheel, finished by hand rather than fired to a gloss.

01

Clay

Terracotta

Ordinary red clay, thrown on a wheel. The warmth of it is still there under the paint if you look at the rim.

02

Painted

Not glazed

A chalky off-white laid on by hand, thin enough that the texture of the clay reads straight through it.

03

Full

Round belly

The body is wide and the neck is short, which is what lets a few stems fan out instead of standing to attention.

04

Varied

Each one differs

Thicker paint in one place, thinner in another. Two vases from the same batch will not match exactly.

FROM THE WORKSHOP

We stopped glazing these because the shine was doing all the talking. Paint leaves the clay audible — you can still see where the wheel was, and the vase looks like it came from somewhere.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered

A few things worth knowing before it arrives.

Is it watertight?

No. The finish is paint, not glaze, so it is for dried material only. A liner does not make it safe either — condensation will still mark the outside.

What should I put in it?

Dried stems, pampas, bare branches, or nothing. The shape holds its own empty, which is half the reason to buy it.

How do I clean it?

A dry cloth, or a soft brush. Water on the painted surface will leave a mark.

Does the paint rub off?

Not with ordinary handling. It is a cured finish rather than a wash, but it is matte, so a hard knock on an edge can show.

Is it heavy?

It has the weight you expect from real clay. Enough to stay put on a console with tall stems in it.

Made by hand

The variation is the object, not a flaw.

Every piece is shaped, sanded and finished in a small workshop. Grain, tone and outline move from one to the next, so the piece that arrives is yours rather than a copy of the photograph.
