How big is it?

9 in / 23 cm across and 4 in / 10 cm deep. Deep enough to fill, small enough to leave on a console without taking it over.

Why is it so light?

Paulownia is one of the lightest timbers worked — the wood Japanese cabinetmakers chose for kiri chests because it weighs almost nothing and stays true instead of warping.

Are the scallops identical?

No. The rim is carved by hand, so the scallops vary in width and depth and the tool marks stay visible inside. That is the point.

Can I use it for food?

It is a decorative bowl. Dry, whole things are fine; anything wet or oily should not sit on the finish.

Shipping and returns

Free shipping on every order, wherever you are. No minimum, no handling fee at checkout.

Orders are prepared in 1–3 business days. Delivery then takes 3–7 business days from a US warehouse, or 7–20 from an overseas workshop. Tracking arrives by email, and an order with several pieces can turn up in more than one parcel.

Changed your mind? You have thirty days. Return shipping within the US is on us.

Our materials

We work with solid wood, stone, glass and natural fibre, chosen for how they age rather than how they photograph. Every piece is finished by hand, so grain, tone and outline shift from one to the next.

More on how we choose them

A QUIET OBJECT

A rim that rises and falls

Most bowls draw one flat circle and stop. This one moves the whole way round, so the shadow along the rim changes as the light does. Set it on a console with nothing in it and it still has something to say at four in the afternoon.

MATERIAL & MAKING

Carved, not machined

Hand tools on the lightest timber in the workshop.

01

Lightweight

Paulownia

Among the lightest woods worked, and stable with it — it stays true rather than warping as it ages.

02

Scalloped

Rim by hand

Each scallop is cut individually, which is why they vary in width and why no two bowls share a rim.

03

Honest

Tool marks

The inside keeps the marks of the gouge. Sanding them out would make it look moulded, so we leave them.

04

Black

Thin finish

Dark enough to read as a shape, thin enough that the carved surface still shows underneath.

FROM THE WORKSHOP

You cannot rush a scalloped rim. Go too fast and the wood tears; go too slow and every cut looks the same, which is worse. The rim should look like a hand made it, because one did.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered

A few things worth knowing before it arrives.

Will mine match the photo?

The shape will. The rim will not — every scallop is cut by hand, so the rhythm round the edge is unique to your piece.

Is the wood solid?

Yes, solid paulownia carved from one block. Nothing glued, nothing veneered.

Why are there marks inside?

They are gouge marks from the carving. They are left on purpose: sand them away and the bowl starts to look machine-made.

How do I clean it?

A damp cloth and a dry-off. No dishwasher, no soaking, no standing water.

Can it hold fruit?

Whole dry fruit, yes. It is sold as a decorative piece, so anything wet or cut is better on a plate.

Made by hand

The variation is the object, not a flaw.

Every piece is shaped, sanded and finished in a small workshop. Grain, tone and outline move from one to the next, so the piece that arrives is yours rather than a copy of the photograph.
