How long does one burn?

Around forty minutes. The scent stays in the room for a good while after the stick has gone out.

Is it strong?

Sandalwood is warm and dry rather than sweet or sharp. One stick is right for a normal room; two will be too much.

Do I need a holder?

Yes, and a heatproof surface under it. Ash falls the whole way along the stick as it burns.

Why does it matter that there are no dyes?

Dyed sticks smell of the dye as well as the scent, especially in the first minute. Undyed ones give you the wood and nothing else.

Our materials

We work with solid wood, stone, glass and natural fibre, chosen for how they age rather than how they photograph. Every piece is finished by hand, so grain, tone and outline shift from one to the next.

The room keeps it after it is out

Forty minutes is the useful length. Short enough that you light one on purpose rather than leaving it burning, long enough that the smell settles into the room instead of sitting in a cloud by the holder. You notice it an hour later, faintly, and that is the point.

A few things worth knowing before it arrives.

How many rooms will one stick scent?

One ordinary room. In an open-plan space it will read as faint rather than absent.

Will it set off a smoke alarm?

Rarely, but keep it away from a detector and never burn it in a small closed room directly underneath one.

Where should I not burn it?

Anywhere air is moving — a draught, an open window, a fan. The smoke goes sideways and the scent never settles.

Does it come with a holder?

No, just the sticks. Any holder with a heatproof dish under it will do.

How should I store them?

In the box, somewhere dry and out of direct sun. They keep their scent for years that way.

Every piece is shaped, sanded and finished in a small workshop. Grain, tone and outline move from one to the next, so the piece that arrives is yours rather than a copy of the photograph.
